As I sit here this morning going through our mail, I realize just how blessed House in the Woods is. We frequently get donations In Memory of a loved one, however, today we have received money in honor of grandchildren as their Christmas gift, from a clothing club (they decided this would be better than spending money on themselves), from an IRA (possibly their required withdrawal) and money in honor of someone’s birthday. These are becoming more frequent as people come up with more creative ways to donate.
A huge thanks to all who have donated, in anyway, over this past year.
Please consider a contribution, no matter the size, to House in the Woods. It may seem like a small amount to you but a donation of any size can make a huge difference in a life or even save a life. In the short time our veterans are here, we often see changes in them and hear stories of changes when they return home.

Paul House Shares About Doe Tags and                    Moose Tag

December 7th: I have asked Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in Maine, more than once, about giving doe tags to some of our vets and the answer I always get is that it will have to go to legislature. The same when I ask for a moose tag for a purple heart vet, “it will have to go to legislature”. To be honest with you I am sick and tired of this for an answer. When some of our men and women that have been in combat and come back with missing limbs, post traumatic stress, traumatic brain injuries and other things and I simply ask for a handful of doe tags and a moose tag and all I get is “it will have to go to legislature”, to me this is not acceptable. I get the same old answer every time and nobody does anything about it. If you are a representative of the state of Maine and you really care about our veterans and helping our veterans heal through hunting, please contact me by messenger or by phone. December 8^th: Just wanted to let everyone know that after I posted about the deer permits and the moose tag, I have had three representatives and someone from SAMS contact me and said they want to see what they can do to help. I am going to be meeting with at least one of them next week and hopefully more.

December 12th: Myself, with two other vets who volunteer for House in the Woods and four representatives met late this afternoon to talk about the any deer permits and a moose tag. The any deer permits and moose tag will be going through the proper channels and will be in place when they begin the new session in January. It could be in March before a decision is made. Now it is wait and see what happens. If we need to testify when it comes up, I will be asking any vet or volunteer that has experienced a retreat at House in the Woods to testify how these retreats help. Again, I will keep you posted when something happens.

An Amazing Gift

Paul House shares: We have been trying to get land here in Maine for House in the Woods primarily for deer hunting for quite a few years and have been unsuccessful. Suddenly, this year, we have had a couple of families step up who are going to let us use their property for hunting. House in the Woods will have more options for deer and bird hunting beginning this year and years to come. This will benefit the veterans, wounded combat and those with PTSD to allow for great days of hunting closer to the lodge.

 

 Jeff and Kim Martin and family are graciously offering to let us use their five hundred acre farmland in St. Albans for our veterans to hunt through House in the Woods. St. Albans is approximate 1.5 hrs. Southwest of Lee.

Kim Martin shares: This past fall I met Paul House through a mutual friend, Veteran and Maine Guide, Becky Saulnier.  Becky had asked me if my family would give access to Paul House, his group of Maine Guides and the Veterans who travel to the House in the Woods lodge for hunting events. I immediately told Becky we would be honored to give permission.

Our family has a long history of Veterans who served our Country: my husband Jeff’s grandfather was a Marine who served in WWII, his uncle did two tours of duty in Vietnam in the US Army, receiving many awards and several Purple Hearts.

My son~in~law Kevin is a Marine who was with the Unit APS~12 (African Partnership Station). His ship was LSD#43, USS Fort McHenry. He was promoted to Corporal shortly after deployment. Kevin received  the Meritorious Mast Award for outstanding performance as an Amphibious Assault Vehicle Crew Chief.

Jeff and I raised our children Lindsey, Whitney, Erin and Wyatt on our operating dairy farm. After some years we sold our milking herd, opting to farm hay and corn and sell both which we continue to do.

It is our pleasure to open our land to Paul and House in the Woods and the Veterans who have sacrificed so much. We are looking forward to meeting each one who come to hunt.

 

In Stacyville, about 50 minutes Northwest of Lee, Dick and Barbara Pelletier and their very generous family have given us permission to us use their property of over one thousand acres for  deer and bird hunting .  They also donated and deeded a little over one hundred acres to House in the Woods for hunting!

Barbara and Dick Pelletier share: HITW is an amazing organization doing amazing things to honor and help heal our military veterans and their families, who have given so much. We and our sons, Luke and Dawson are more than happy to help in this way. Thank you to Mark Savage for connecting us with Paul House.

Thus, wonderful Christmas gifts were conceived! The epitome of “word of mouth”! These generous presentations stemmed from introductions to Paul House. Both originators of these introductions to House in the Woods are such strong supporters of recognizing, respecting and honoring our veterans. We cannot thank Becky and Mark enough for these introductions.

Paul House shares: I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to be able to use this property for our veterans and active military. These two families have seen how important it is to give our men and women the opportunity to heal by using these properties.

I personally am so grateful for their generosity and can’t thank them enough for opening up this great opportunity to be able to do more for our heroes.

 

A Father’s Dream

I usually don’t share my dreams with too many people, but I had a busy morning and I came home and ate lunch and decided to take a nap on the couch. When I fell asleep I started to dream and Joel came home to visit us, and we were talking and hanging out like we always did. It was so good to see Joel again and hang out together as a family. We were all so happy, it was like old times. Things were back to normal again in my dream, it was such a great feeling and like we were whole again as a family. Then I turned around with my back to my family and my daughter Joy asked, dad why are you crying? And I said that I wasn’t crying, and that my eyes were just watering up, when in fact I was crying in my dream. Then I woke up and realized that Joel was not with us physically like old times, but was here in my dream and came to say hello. I was glad Joel came for a short visit even though when I woke up I was sad. These kinds of dreams are bitter sweet. We all need to make sure we use our days wisely, and never take our time on earth for granted, because none of us know what tomorrow will hold…….Paul House, Father of a Fallen Hero

Join us for the 9th Annual House in the Woods fishing Derby on Great Pond in Great Pond Hancock County. The derby will start at 6:00 am with the final weigh~in at 3:30 pm. A huge crowd of people always show up!!

The entry fee for the derby will be $5.00 which includes fee for our fantastic prizes.

Paul and Dee House founded House in the Woods after their son, Sgt. Joel A. House, was killed by a roadside bomb while serving in the Army in Iraq.

They dreamed of creating a program using Maine’s outdoor resources that would help military families support one another. Today that mission continues with the same determination as the day the first guest arrived!

House in the Woods was envisioned to honor all of America’s Fallen.

As editor and friend of House in the Woods, it is my humble opinion that Paul and Dee House, their family and many, many volunteers and steadfast, generous supporters have brought this dream to fruition.

Hundreds of Veterans and their families, from all walks of life have experienced the warm welcome, the love and respect and the healing from  the dedication of House in the Woods. 

We look forward to welcoming new friends in 2018. Please know that we love and honor each of you who unselfishly have served our country, and the family members who have experienced the loss of a brave warrior.

November is a month in which we give thanks for so many generous and unselfish people throughout our great United States who give of their time and money to support our Veterans of all wars, our combat wounded and those suffering with PTSD.

Deanna House: It was such an honor to hear and meet Medal of Honor Recipient SSGT Ryan Pitts November 22nd at USM. His story gave me goose bumps. He is from New Hampshire. I hope he can join us for a HITW .

Veteran’s Day USM Law School Lunchtime Panel

Deanna House, Director of Administration, House in the Woods, is attending Law School at USM. She was invited to be on the panel on Veterans Day talking about House in the Woods and her son, SSGT. Joel A. House.

The Law School observed Veteran’s Day with a lunchtime panel, The Spectrum of Experiences & Services of Veterans in the Maine Law Community featuring panelists, Professor Don Zillman, Mike Adams ’20, Kelsey Franklin ’21, Emily Bienek ’20, and Deanna House ’21. Dean Danielle Conway moderated the panel.

I want to thank AHERO, a veterans organization located in Shorter, Alabama,who are helping veterans heal through hunting, fishing etc. In December two veterans through House in the Woods will be going to Alabama on a deer and hog hunt with AHERO, and they are providing everything for them on this trip. We at House in the Woods are so grateful for this organization that provides these kind of memories, as this trip is for a father and son who are both veterans.

This is where our active military can come, while on leave, before returning to base or before being deployed overseas.  

  This is where veterans of all wars are honored in the most respectful and caring manner that is so deserving of their years of service.

This is where we continue to honor our brave warriors who paid, with their lives, for our freedom and liberties we enjoy each day. Those who are among the bravest of warriors from long ago and from just last week.

This is where many of the volunteers and supporters give of their time and financial support to be a part of honoring our military men and women from all 50 states.

 

This is where, together we heal !

 

 

Our volunteers interact with the veterans and their families attending the events . A great number of volunteers for House in the Woods are veterans themselves.

It takes a veteran to truly understand another veteran!

Since the inception of House in the Woods so many people have come forward as volunteers. Those who have that understanding of the military life, of our veterans and what they sacrificed, of our families who have found themselves with the title of Gold Star Families.

We are so blessed to have such a great, dependable and committed group of volunteers who all understand and believe in our mission.

Dinner Preparations!

The second annual Thanksgiving Dinner for Veterans and Community was held at our lodge. Approximately 90 meals were served to Veterans and community friends. None of this is possible without the team of volunteers we are blessed to have who step up to help with preparations and serving of the meals. The beautiful meal was an $8.00 donation per person with serving times of 2:00, 4:00 and 6:00 pm on Thanksgiving day. 

 

Wendy Voter: I believe we may have found our new thanksgiving tradition! Thank you Deanna House, Paul House, Becky, Diane, Zach and all the other great volunteers at House in the Woods veteran and family retreat. Thanksgiving dinner was delicious, the atmosphere warm and the friendly hospitality made us feel like family!! Love what this place represents and stands for. We were blessed to join you all today and can’t wait for next, maybe we will volunteer!

Lawrence shares: I was there at the lodge well before the 2 PM setting to hang out. They were kind enough to prepare two meals to go. My 15 mile drive home going dead West is a killer when the sun is setting so didn’t want to eat there. As it was, even at 2:30. I hit a couple real bad short stretches…These people, especially Dee and Paul, never cease to amaze me for all they do. Wish I was able to do more to help out. My take home meals were huge and super good. My thanks to all.

On Dec 1st and 2nd, Kittery Trading Post held their annual Ruger Weekend promotion. This is a very busy and successful firearms promotion they have been holding for several years. As part of this year’s promotion, they have acquired a Ruger 44 Carbine from Ruger’s vault.

This is an extremely sought after firearm. They held a silent auction which they began promoting around November 1st 2018 via their flyer, Facebook page, Ruger forums, and Ruger Facebook page. For those of you who know Rugers you will understand that there has been an outstanding interest in this auction!!

When the rifle was introduced in 1961, the company called it the Deerstalker, stamping the name on the receiver. In 1985, the Ruger 44 Carbine was discontinued due to its high production cost after nearly a quarter million of the rifles had been made. 

The winner ………..Steve Martel with the final bid of $1,800. Thank you Steve for bidding!

Kittery Trading Post wanted this promotion to benefit a worthy charity organization that works with wounded Veterans and reached out to House in the Woods. 100% of the proceeds of this auction will go to House in the Woods!

Bill Dereszewski (center of photo) shares: On Veterans Day I would like to have people know what they could do to honor veterans right here in our state.
House in the Woods is located in Lee Maine. Paul House and his wife Deanna House run a facility that offers healing on so many levels for veterans and could always use help.
I’m sure you’ve heard of them, but I want to let people know what it is that they do.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Paul and his wife at a sportsman’s show a few years back and always thought what they did was honorable, but never fully knew until I further checked them out. When I did, and got to see for myself, I was in awe. It made me realize how lucky we were to have such a blessing right here in Maine. I saw for myself this is exactly what everyone should see not just on Veterans Day but 365 days a year, not to ever forget the sacrifices these soldiers made. I also saw  Paul and Deanna truly care and are exactly the perfect team to make this what it is.
I’m lost for words at the great works they do for veterans and their families and how welcoming and supportive they are. It’s because they understand in so many ways. As Veterans Day is marked on a calendar to them its 365/24/7……
PLEASE, check out House in the Woods and what they stand for.They take what we all want to do and make reality out of it for the soldiers and families.

Greetings one and all! If you are new to the House in the Woods Newsletters, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Brenda Everson~Shaw.

I have had the privilege, for nearly three years, to create the monthly newsletters. I attempt to gather pictures that reflect the moments shared by veterans and active military who walk through the doors of the lodge.

I’ve had the honor to interview many of the veterans and  men and women currently serving our great United States who have been guests at the beautiful lodge in Lee, Maine. I have also been able to share some backstories of the fabulous volunteers who tirelessly give many hours to help make the accommodations and meals at HITW an amazing experience, whether it’s a few days of fishing or a week of hunting in the wood of Maine.

Christmas will be here very soon. Shopping has begun by many. Black Friday is creeping up on us when the brave and bold step out among the many to find the perfect deal. Yet, many of us prefer the convenience of shopping online. Perhaps you are a fan of Cyber Monday. I tend to shy away from that as it seems everyone who prefers to skip Black Friday hops on the Cyber Monday train. Yikes!! It can get tough to grab that one day special!

Greetings and welcome to House in the Woods October Newsletter. Baseball ended when the Red Sox WON the title as the World Series Champs! Football is in full swing with the New England Patriots, local colleges and high school favorites. What is there not to love about Autumn except it is the precursor to Winter.

Feeling Peaceful at House in the Woods

We all have experienced hurt and pain in our lives. We all wish that there was rain to wash it away. Everyone should have a sanctuary that they can go to and feel safe. That is exactly what House In The Woods has created for many veterans, myself included. There is common ground that is shared between everyone that is involved at House in the Woods. I spent an amazing two days at The House In The Woods. Shot my first partridge. I cannot express how important places like this are. A piece of my heart stayed with the house, and the people who donate their time to us. It is a wonderful feeling to know I am always welcome. Being able to share time with other Veterans, and be surrounded by the love and support of the volunteers, the feeling, and the healing we get can not be measured. I Served in the US ARMY. I was a Paratrooper and a medic. Deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq .

Sept 30th the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association dropped in with an awesome gift of a donation from their recent ride. We always love it when this group of riders pull up to our lodge! Such generous men and women who are dedicated to supporting our veterans.

A FATHER’S VIEW OF YOUTH HUNTING

Luke House and I discussed the importance of teaching the younger generation all aspects of hunting. For those of you new to HITW newsletters, Luke is the son of Paul and Deanna House, Directors of House in the Woods.

As editor I asked Luke if he would share his life’s experiences of growing up as a hunter in Maine. I cannot thank him enough! The following is penned by Luke:

As a youth raised in rural Maine, hunting was a coming of age experienced by myself and many of my peers. I fondly recall the years pining to be old enough to walk into the woods with my Dad holding my own rifle. When I finally reached the legal age to hunt, I found that there was a new experience that garnered equal or greater excitement to Christmas morning……Opening Day of Deer Season!

I spent my first couple of seasons following Dad through the woods learning the tricks of the trade; how to walk, how to be still and how to look for deer signs. Most importantly were the conversations that took place that served to enhance the bonding experience between father and son. Conversations about life, God, and family were the norm. I learned that it was important to kill only what you or another would eat and to not be wasteful in the harvest of an animal.

When I finally bagged my first deer at the age of 12, I was hooked. I also felt as if a torch had been passed on and this meant that I was responsible for the promotion and advocacy of the sport of hunting.

Fast forward nearly 20 years. I was changing the diapers of my own little boy Joel, named after my brother Sgt. Joel House who was KIA in Iraq in 2007. Joel came a week or so before planned. I happened to be out hunting when his Mom called to tell me it was time. By that afternoon Joel had arrived. I remember thinking that day how I couldn’t wait to bring him into the woods like my Dad had done for me. When Joel was three I started getting him familiar with hunting, teaching him age appropriate firearms safety and taking him into the woods on short hunting excursions.

A few years back the state of Maine did away with the minimum hunting age which previously had been 10 years of age. I wasn’t sure how old Joel would be when I let him carry a rifle into the woods, but I knew it wouldn’t be before he was ready. At age six he started shooting small caliber rifles and, while he quickly gained proficiency, it was clear that he was not ready to accurately harvest an animal.

The next year my Dad purchased Joel a youth model 7mm-08 Savage Rifle for Christmas. We began to practice shooting more regularly and Joel steadily improved his accuracy and level of comfort with the rifle.

Once bear season rolled around in September I was comfortable that he was ready. Joel sat four nights and saw no bear but we learned that he could sit and wait quietly for five hours with barely a peep if he needed to.

Next up was Youth Day for Maine deer hunters. I took Joel that day not knowing if we would see anything. Well we did, as a young doe walked in front of our stand and Joel performed just as we had planned. He made a kill shot and we celebrated briefly.

This was a bonding moment that I think will be hard to rival in the years to come. Joel talked maturely about his feelings about killing an animal and I knew that he understood and respected what had occurred as well as the sacredness of harvesting an animal for life.

The political climate has changed a great deal since I was a boy and hunting has fallen out of favor and stigmatized in certain circles. I am of the opinion that this shift is due largely to lack of education and quality interaction with responsible sportsmen. As the next generation comes of age we would be well served to teach them true sportsmanship and give them the tools they need to ensure that our trade is around for generations to come.

 

Young Joel’s First Harvest

Luke House shares: I’m a proud Dad today to say the least! Joel and I went out this morning and didn’t see anything. We went back out this afternoon and had this deer and another come out in front of us around 5:15. He told me that he was nervous and his heart was beating fast…just like I had told him it would when he finally saw a deer.

The first shot he took was difficult as the deer had walked behind some trees. He had a clean miss but maintained his composure as the deer then stepped into the open and presented a better shot. He fired and it was a deer down.

We talked about respect for the animal and being thankful for the meat provided by the deer. We talked about uncle Joel and figured he was watching and proud. This experience will be with me and I’m sure with him forever and I am grateful for today. Great job buddy!

Ava Sutherland, sister to Jax, also had a great day hunting in Lincoln Center where she harvested her button buck!  She stopped by to show her 91 year old Great~grandfather Ray Sutherland, a Veteran of the Korean War.

Sarah Hatch Sutherland, Mom to Ava and Jax, shares:  Thank you Paul and Turbo! Headed to tag him this morning! Many memories made yesterday for both of my kiddos. Hunting is definitely something they look forward to each year as this is special time they spend with their Dad. Every year there is a story to tell and we are thankful to have Turbo be a part of a few of those stories now!

Youth Deer Day

Saturday, October 20th was Youth Deer Day in the Pine Tree State. Hunters who hold a valid junior hunting license have their own days for deer, bear, turkey and waterfowl, and the deer day signals that the full deer season is coming soon.

Normal hunting laws for deer apply on youth hunting days. Hunters are allowed to take one deer of either sex with a firearm, bow and arrow or crossbow.

The full firearms season for deer begins on Oct. 29. The archery season is currently taking place and ends on Oct. 26.

Paul House Shares: I met Jeff Osborne (of Nature Productions) this year on our black bear hunt at House in the Woods. Jeff shot this deer and needed a tracking dog to find it the next morning. Turbo got on a hot track and I brought him back and he recovered the deer on a short track. Thank you Jeff for sharing the video!

If that’s not your preference, that’s okay. We’re all hunters on the same team. November 11, 2018 is Veterans Day

When you see a Veteran shake their hand. Give them a hug or a pat on the back and sincerely thank them for all the unselfish sacrifices they and their family made for you and your loved ones. Your thanks will possibly be the first kind word they hear that day.

At House in the Woods we have been so blessed to have met hundreds of veterans from all walks of life. Men and women, who have unselfishly served our country with honor, integrity and respect for the job of providing each American with all of our liberties and freedom we so often take for granted. Our veterans have been fighting for those in foreign lands who also want freedom and the right to a safe life.

Many of us associated with HITW have family and loved ones who have served and many who are currently serving. Some come home broken in spirit and physically wounded. These are our men; our boys, our sons, our husbands, our fathers, our brothers! These are our women;  our daughters, our wives, our sisters, our girls! These are our veterans who traveled to foreign lands to defend the life and liberties of many…of you!

At House in the Woods we are here to help each Veteran who walks through our doors to heal, offering outdoor programs to bring together small groups of Active Military, Veterans, and their Family Members to relax, share, bond, and deal with the stress, loss, grief, and other emotions which can haunt the grieving soul.

Task Force Heroes

Timothy James~Paul Yates joined us at House in the Woods last month for Black Bear Hunting. As editor of this newsletter I am always seeking to share great works of other nonprofits for Veterans. Timothy’s name came across my desk again…nothing is coincidence!

Timothy Yates, Director of Field Operations for Task Force Heroes, has spent the last ten years working in both conventional and special operation forces. He is 4th generation military. During this time, he has deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He has served the last 7 years as a paratrooper and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained on his last deployment to Afghanistan.

I had the honor to connect with Timothy this week when I noticed he is an integral part of Task Force Heroes located in Bozeman, Montana. Timothy is Director of Field Operations and his father Pastor Shane Yates is CEO……. Warriors Helping Warriors.

When the rifle was introduced in 1961, the company called it the Deerstalker, stamping the name on the receiver. In 1985, the Ruger 44 Carbine was discontinued due to its high production cost after nearly a quarter million of the rifles had been made. 

The winner will be announced with a Facebook live event on Sunday December 2nd 2018 in the afternoon. Kittery Trading Post wanted this promotion to benefit a worthy charity organization that works with wounded vets and reached out to House in the Woods. 100% of the proceeds of this auction will go to House in the Woods!

Friend of House in the Woods Extends Enlistment 

House in the Woods would like to congratulate Justin Gardella for completing seven years of Honorable Service as a Combat Medic and Re-Enlisting for another six years. As an active duty U.S. Army soldier, Justin joined us this year for the Black Bear Hunt where he was successful in harvesting a great bear!  We were honored to have Justin at our lodge and are very proud of his decision to continue to serve our great country in the capacity of a Combat Medic who, during the heat of battle, is first on line to save our combat wounded.

(Bangor Daily News Obituary): Gordon Ames Boyington, 63, of Milford, Maine, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Gordon was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time at his camp and was always busy with a variety of projects. Gordon was admired for his hard work, as well as love and dedication to his family and friends. 

Gordon is survived by his wife of 40 years, Tammy, sons Sebastian and Chandler.

(HITW Editor’s Note): July of 2016 I was introduced to Gordon Boyington at the construction site of House in the Woods in Lee, Maine. I found him to be the quintessential Mainer; determined, generous with praise of those involved in the project, a lover of nature, hunting and fishing, and his pride in his family. He sat next to me at a picnic table beside a converted bus that was being used as a temporary office for the construction project.

As he was sharing his background with me he quickly moved the conversation to Brenda, what are you going to do for us at House in the Woods. He definitely did not mince his words and was very direct, which I respect tremendously in an human being. I was sure he wondered who the heck I was being flown in to meet Paul and Dee House who had invested their all in this project. I shared with him how a dear friend and veteran who lived in Lincoln, ME asked me to “just come see this project”….my friend knew me well enough to know I would be hooked immediately and offered up his plane and pilot to fly me in!

I assured Gordon that I was going to utilize the skills I have to make others aware of the mission of House in the Woods. After my flight back to Cape Cod I had learned a lot more about Gordon by speaking to others involved in this huge undertaking of building a retreat lodge for veterans. Gordon was out speaking to every business and individual he knew throughout Maine to ask for financial donations and in-kind donations for this project. Being timid was foreign to Gordon. He grabbed this project by the horns and dedicated his waking hours to it 100%.

Meeting Dee and Paul sealed the deal in my heart for this mission. My family with a large military presence influenced the ramblings going on in my mind and Gordon Boyington’s conversation had a major impact on my decision.

 Soon Mother Nature will pull out all the stops to create her masterpiece of brilliant reds, oranges and yellows. Leaves are beginning to show their colors this week. Summer was great fun and a very busy season for all!! I think most of us…except perhaps the kids…are ready for the next season. Temps are dropping, it was a hotter than usual summer this year! Welcome less humidity, cooler mornings, cooler evenings, warm Indian Summer days. September 22nd is the first day of Autumn. 

Many think of Autumn as Harvest Time. At House in the Woods we’ve been having a Black Bear harvest time!!!

 

There has been three weeks of hunting of black bear at our lodge during our 2018 Black Bear Hunting event. Veterans and active military alike staying at the lodge for five days per week. New friendships are forged between the veterans and  their Maine Guides.

Guides and Veterans Gather

We were honored to have 40 hunters and 18 guides and guide assistants for the event of Black Bear Hunting. Fabulous people, generous souls, gathering to have an excellent experience in the wood of Maine. But more so, new, lifelong friendships were born. Veterans young and old, active military, combat wounded and many volunteers who made the week at House in the Woods lodge a week to remember!

This past week was one of the best weeks I’ve had in a long time! I had the awesome opportunity to go to House in the Woods in Lee, Maine with 15 other combat veterans to hunt black bear! We showed up not knowing anyone, and left at the end of the week great friends. It really was a great group of guys! All the guides were unbelievably knowledgeable and worked their butts off for us! They really showed a passion for what they do and helping vets!….

There really are no words to describe how awesome the week was! If you don’t know about House in the Woods and their story, take a few minutes and read about it!  HOUSE IN THE WOODS Paul and his wife Deanna really care about the veterans, and it shows in their actions! For those of you new to HITW, Bangor is where you will arrive if you fly in commercial aircraft. Many smaller airstrips are available for the smaller aircraft!!

Pam Drinkwater Ward, Maine Guide:It’s been a couple of weeks since I left guiding at HITW yet I have made friends forever. I have since heard from guides that I worked with and veterans that came hunting. It was memories that I will never forget. A handmade knife that was given to me by one of the hunters, and an unexpected holster and a funny shirt for my birthday while I was there. The veterans were all so appreciative of their trip to HITW. I went there to help them have a great time, but came home with more th an I gave. Happy to have had the opportunity to have volunteered.

Pam lives in Houlton, Maine and has been a guide for nine years. She owns and operates Mainely Adventures Lodge in Houlton.

Hunting With a Hero is another great nonprofit for veterans which often sends our combat Warriors to events at House in the Woods. We’re always so glad to see them come to Black Bear Week.

Feeding the Hunters and Crew

Each week during Black Bear Hunting we welcome our veterans, guides and active military with a lobster feed. Fresh Maine lobster with all the fixings! With the help of many, many volunteers and generosity of businesses and community members our pantry is stocked and our commercial kitchen filled with fresh foods for three meals per day.

So as I reflect back on last week it’s hard to put into words what it meant to me. Spending a week at HITW guiding true American heroes. Men who put there bodies on the line for us was simply amazing. We killed bears, shared stories and all around bonded. I hope I’ve made some friends for life because these are the guys you want in your corner. To each and everyone of you. Thank you. It was my honor to spend the week with you.…Clint

Clint was one of the veterans who took Jim Neville’s class to become a Maine Guide, held at House in the Woods this past spring .

Clint served in the U.S. Army from 1997-2000, stationed at Fort Hood Texas when he was deployed to Bosnia. His primary MOS was 63E M1A1 Hull Systems Mechanic and drove the M88 recovery vehicle. 

He grew up in the Maine woods hunting and fishing…

Clint shares:  I’ve always revered the title Maine Guide, so I took it on as a challenge to myself to see if I had what it takes. It wasn’t easy but I was able to do it. I don’t see myself ever quitting my job at Hinckley Yachts in Trenton Maine where I work the diesel engine and hydraulic installation, sea trial and delivery of new boats. I don’t plan to guide full time, but I do hope to do some on the side. I’m married to a wonderful woman and have three great kids that also love hunting and fishing. My oldest two have already killed bear and deer each.

Becky Saulnier, a U.S. Army Veteran, shares: Spent the past few days helping out with a Bear hunt at HITW. The Veterans were awesome and we had some great conversations and laughs. It was awesome to work with some of the guides that help out up there too. I have learned A LOT in just a couple of days. Very grateful for the opportunity to learn from all of them and I look forward to learning more. Didn’t see any bear but had one circle us then blow at us a lot. Surprised us for sure! We did get to see a red squirrel get caught in a bait bag he did get out but it was funny when he panicked LOL. We also got to witness some raccoon take our bait back down which was kind of funny but not at the same time. Very honored to get the opportunity to sit with these veterans and experience the hunt with them.

I’m now officially a Registered Maine Guide!

If you are thinking about becoming a guide I highly recommend contacting Jim about taking his course. It really helped me A Lot! I felt prepared and confident walking into my test! A thank you to House In The Woods as well for the offer to take the course! I’m honored to finally wear this patch. I will wear it with pride and honor. Thank you to everyone who gave me support through this!  Now off to work!…

 

Each year our compatriots at Combat Marine Outdoors escort some of the veterans to Black Bear Hunting. We are always so glad to see CMO walk through our doors..like brothers coming home.

Along with their veterans they also brought some stunning gifts for House in the Woods.

Paul House shares: I know a lot of people have seen a mountain lion, but for me this was the first. Our intern from Unity college, Tubco and I saw a mountain lion about 10:30 this morning about 20 yards in front of our side by side as we were coming out from bear baiting. The cat was not in any hurry as he crossed the road. He was pretty good sized, and his track is to the right of the shoe in this picture. It measured 4.25 inches across.

Blaine Anthony, known as The Bear Whisper, a Maine native has spent a week here at House in the Woods. Camera crew and all! Blaine, Twyla Jean, and Jeff are great folks.

Blaine Anthony is a familiar face to national TV viewers hosting shows such as Freedom Fighters, North American Safari, Bear Whisperer, The Search and Hitmen for over 11 years. Blaine also runs and owns one of the largest outdoor television production companies, Nature Productions.

Blaine spent his childhood traveling the world as a “Military Brat” living in places as far away Okinawa, Ethiopia, and all over North America. In his late teens and early twenty’s, Blaine worked for large corporations running businesses until finally settling in Maine. Blaine then traded the suits and fancy cars for his love of the outdoor lifestyle and began his career in outdoor television. He now works full time in the outdoor industry with over 8 original productions to his credit and is responsible for dozens of other productions currently in the outdoor industry.

Courtesy of AUGUSTA (NEWS CENTER Maine) — Maine’s gold star families will soon have a new memorial in their honor in Augusta.

The state legislature has approved the construction of such a monument on the north side of Capitol Park.

Each year on the last Sunday in September, America celebrates National Gold Star Mother’s Day. National Gold Star Mother’s Day is a day that was created to recognize and honor those that have lost their son or daughter while serving our country in the United States Armed Forces.

A gold star symbolizes a family member who died while serving the United States Armed Forces. The American Gold Star Mother’s, Inc. was incorporated in 1929 and obtained a federal charter from the United States Congress. It began in the Washington DC area and soon expanded to include affiliated groups throughout the United States.

 

On June 23, 1936, a joint congressional resolution designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day and this holiday has been observed each year by a presidential proclamation.

We want to honor each and every God Star Mother who has lost a son or daughter. Those of us with family members in active duty know at each deployment there is a risk of our loved one making the ultimate sacrifice defending our Country. September has been an outstanding month at House in the Woods! We had the opportunity to meet new veterans and spend some absolutely quality time with them hunting, sharing dinner or in great conversation. Our time with our friends from other nonprofit veteran’s organizations who annually escort some veterans and active duty military is always such a welcome week.

None of this is possible without the generosity of our supporters and volunteers. Thank you for believing in our mission and understanding the great value to our combat wounded and active Armed Forces.

The last few weeks of summer vacation: hot and humid days, lake~time surfing and tubing, fishing and camping, beach combing, hiking and biking. Carnivals and ice creams.

 

The fun~filled days are nearing the end for summertime visitors and residents. It’s back to school by month’s end!

It takes an army of volunteers to feed these hunters and guides. We have been blessed to always have the most dedicated and hardworking volunteers in New England!

If you have heard of this group who prep, cook and serve meals and clean up after and would like to become part of it for one day or even just one meal serving, please join us! It will be an experience you will never forget. The veterans are always so amazed at the meals and the caring and generous volunteers who make them feel at home at the HITW lodge.

Jessica Young~Cloukey is sharing the following message: Are you interested in volunteering to prep, serve and clean up meals at House in the Woods for Bear Season? August 26th~September 16th, three shifts a day: Breakfast 7~10 a.m., lunch 10~2:00 p.m., dinner 7~10 p.m. We will be collaborating volunteers very soon. If interested please contact Farleen Smith 207/991-4616. She will list you for desired days.

From the tremendous donations of gracious businesses, large and small, individuals and families who help fill our inventory of foods and supplies for this large event, we are able to provide outstanding meals for the Black Bear Hunting weeks.

SUNDAYS: Ham & cheese quiche and a Lobster Feed. MONDAYS: Maine Blueberry pancakes, sausage, beans, hot dogs, coleslaw, rolls, lobster rolls, BBQ chips. TUESDAYS: SOS with Paul LeBreck Lasagna, salad, garlic bread, white chicken chili, cornbread. WEDNESDAYS: Eggs to order with bacon, boiled dinner, rolls corn & seafood chowders. THURSDAYS: French toast, stuffed chicken, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, bread, beef stew & dumplings. FRIDAYS: Breakfast casserole, Taco/Burrito bar, Turkey pot pie. SATURDAYS: Cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, Subway…. No planned evening meal as this is when we have the vet change…current hunters leave and new group of veterans arrive.

LOBSTER FEED DONATIONS

Mike Albert tells of the following example of one of this year’s food donations: I wanted to send out a special Thank You for the three companies who are donating 180 lbs. of Lobster for the 3 Lobster Feeds prior to HITW Bear Hunts.

For August 26th Eastern Traders of Nobleboro with the support of Deb Sanderson. Deb has supported HITW in various ways. For September 2nd Stonington Lobster CoOp of Stonington with the support of Ronnie Trundy and all the Board of Directors. For September 9th Bean Maine Lobster Company of Rockland with the support of John Peterdouff President. Bean Lobster Company is a employee owned company.

These are three PATRIOTIC companies who see the good things that House in the Woods is doing for our Active Duty Military and Vets. They have been very nice to deal with. I want to make it clear this is 180 lbs. per Lobster Feed. That is two crates of Lobster each week! This is a great donation!

 

NO MAN LEFT BEHIND

As war remains return from North Korea, families of the fallen troops are asked to provide DNA samples to help with identification. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency officials say they don’t have DNA files for about 9 percent of the nearly 7,700 U.S. troops missing in action from the Korean War. Here, 55 cases of remains believed to be missing Korean War casualties arrive at Osan Air Base, South Korea, on June 27.

Maine Gold Star Families Memorial Groundbreaking Ceremony

Sunday, October 7 at 2 PM – 5 PM

You are invited to join the groundbreaking ceremony for the Maine Gold Star Families Memorial Monument on Sunday, October 7th from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm at Veterans Park in Lewiston, Maine. This is the day after the Gold Star Families Dedication Ceremony in NH.

Perhaps you have often wondered where to begin….how to help…whom to ask. Veterans of all ages are a proud band of brothers and sisters, very often too proud to ask for help. Yet, if you simply approach a veteran to tell them you respect and honor his commitment he made to our country and the sacrifices he endured…it is sincerely a beginning. Shake his hand and thank him.

Offer to buy him a cup of coffee or help him with his yard work. Listen to his concerns and show a sincere interest in the many stories he has held so close to his heart. The stories won’t happen right away…..he needs to feel you are trustworthy of such information. But, you will find yourself wondering why you took so long to simply reach out to an individual who fought for our great country as a young man…a man who was willing to put his life on the line for YOU! Whether he is a Vietnam Veteran or a young Iraq or Afghanistan Veteran…they all paid a price which we can never truly repay.

I had the honor to  interview Andrea Fleming Munson, their mother, via messenger who shares the following: The boys presented the money to the House family today that they raised through their fundraiser! They raised a total of $1,005! They also got to tour this amazing facility and learn more about it! The House family is pretty awesome and make a huge impact on the community! Humbling experience to say the least .

I asked if they Munsons were a military family residing in Lincoln.

We are not a military family, but my oldest son has always had a deep respect and interest in veterans. I showed the boys a post that was shared on Face Book by Paul about a soldier from Florida that needed help with funds to make the trip. They immediately wanted to help. So I contacted Paul and he said that people had already stepped up for this particular soldier, but there is always a need for extra help. So they decided to take on a fundraiser to help raise additional funds.

They started with the idea of a bake sale and I mentioned a raffle. They did a bake sale at Steaks N Stuff in Lincoln as well as a raffle. Many local small businesses stepped in and donated services and gift certificates for them to raffle off!

Once I made the initial post about their fundraiser, people kept messaging me to add items to their raffle list. It was quite amazing! 

I stated that she must be so proud of her sons. 

I am very proud of them! Thank you!

Telling her this is a rather unique piece for me to write as most donations are from organizations in which members are adults, Andrea responded:

Awe, thank you. This makes me a little teary-eyed. I just picked Alex up from football practice and was telling him about your interest in their story. His response was “why isn’t that what everyone should do for our vets? They sacrifice their limbs, life, and so much more and some never see their families again. Everyone should help in some way.” I said your attitude towards it is why people are touched!

As creator of these newsletters this article came to me just as I was about to end with the piece of those who wonder how to help. I checked Paul’s FB page one more time to find any news…and this fell right into my lap! No, there is no such thing in my life as coincidence!…I, for one, am VERY touched……….

Business owners are fully staffed and all types of businesses are booming for fishing trips, campgrounds, restaurants where you find THE BEST lobster in our great Nation. Ice cream shops…everyone loves a cone in the summer…it’s a tradition!!

Monica Buffington is a student from Conneticut studying at Unity College in Unity, Maine . Monica’s major is Adventure Therapy and Adventure Based Environmental Education. She is helping Paul House with trail grooming, bear bait preparation, and summer activities. 

Monica shares: I had been researching different organizations and programs to see where I would fit. One goal that I always had in mind when I was looking into my majors was to be able to travel with my job, stay active in the outdoors, and give back to the military. While I was looking for an internship I created an email introducing myself and my military background, sharing a little about why I am pursuing the avenue that I am. Dee House replied to me fairly quickly and invited me to come to the lodge last fall. I came up for a visit and it just seemed like the perfect fit. I grew up in a hunting family so I knew that I’d have some hunting expeditions as well.

 

I was born into a military family, my father served in the Air Force for 22 years and he retired just before I started high school. I grew up overseas beginning at age 5 years, spending five years in Germany living off base but attending  school in a DoDEA school system and three years in Okinawa living on base at Camp Shields. My first time back in the United States was eighth grade. Around 2010 my dad got new orders to come back state side where he was stationed at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. This was a hard transition for me because I wasn’t military community anymore and I didn’t really feel like home. We spent 11 months there until my Dad retired.

After high school I felt like it was time to move so when I was searching for colleges I was looking out of state and I found Unity through my uncle who had known about the college.

I saw how the military was being treated and at that time all I was hearing was bad so I wanted to give back. I had so many wonderful experiences living in a military community. I couldn’t bring myself to sign on but I wanted to give back somehow. That’s why I chose the two majors I did because it met my goals for what I wanted to do with career.

Monica is also assisting Deanna House with the business end of running a nonprofit. Welcome Monica!!!!

July 18th~19th We Had a Blast!!

Five Veterans joined Paul and Deanna House and Monica Buffington on a half day fishing trip on the Kennebec. We arrived the afternoon before, enjoying rest and feast at local establishments!!

Jim Myers shares: Just got home from my fishing trip with House in The Woods. Had a great time and managed to catch 3 Stripers none were keepers but very fun to catch, one of the Veterans caught a 31” Striper. Most of all I enjoyed bonding with other Veterans! It was truly an honor to be able to go and I thank Paul and Deanna House of House in The Woods for a well organized trip and for giving me this opportunity I truly enjoyed it !! Hope next time our son will be able to go if he can get the time off. I was truly amazed of all the volunteer work that goes into one of these trips and all the generous people that helped with the trip!

When Monica returns to Unity College this fall Colt will start Emotional Support Animal training at a class at Unity. He’s only 10 months old. She’s working with him this summer, so he went fishing with Turbo for some on the job training!

Motorcycle Groups To Visit HITW

August 11th Millinocket American Legion Riders Post #80 Motorcycle Ride

Millinocket American Legion Riders Post #80 has been a staunch supporter of House in the Woods. We love these men and women who support and  who fully understand the mission of our nonprofit for veterans. All who proudly stand up for our country and 

 American Legion Riders chapters are well known for their charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children’s hospitals, schools, veterans homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships.

 

August 18th Combat Veterans Motorcycle Riders Association of Bangor, Maine

Motorcycle Ride starts in Newport.  Proceeds will be in support of House in the Woods. Always a fun time with this great group of riders.

Combat Motorcycle Riders is Association of Combat Veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who ride motorcycles as a hobby. Their mission now is to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms.

The CVMA is committed to welcoming home Combat Vets of all our wars and remembering those who are still not home yet. They are a fellowship of veterans, and those who support our veterans, not a motorcycle club.  If you are a Combat Vet and ride a motorcycle over 500 cc as a hobby you are eligible for membership in the CVMA.

CVMA sponsor and/or participate in many motorcycle-related charity events each year, and as a 501(c) non-profit organization, they donate to various Veteran care facilities and Veteran charities.

Rain or Shine…it will be loads of fun no matter what Mother Nature serves up for the day!

 Hosted by Airline ATV Club, several ATV clubs have been invited, coming from different directions, to join in on the fun.  There are designated trails, often the back roads are part of the trails, ending at HITW lodge in Lee.

We will do an optional ride around I.P. Road that could include some of the bear hunter veterans coming in that day.

 

 

There will be a catered lunch by Swamp Yankee Barbecue for additional fee.

Feeding The Troops

Last year for the three weeks of bear hunting the meal count was as follows:

Daily: 30 people, 3 times per day for 3 weeks. That’s 90 meals a day times 21 days which is almost 1900 meals. Extra people join in on Sundays for which House in the Woods safely plans for a total of 2000 meals!

Each of these meals are served by volunteers both local and some who are from far away. Donations are from local residents and a business owners alike. Plus we receive monetary donations specifically for the meals during bear hunt weeks.

This year we will be welcoming over 40 veterans and 20 guides over a three week long Bear Hunt with House in the Woods. 

Farleen Smith is our New Volunteer Event Coordinator for this year’s Black Bear Hunt. She is working with Jessica Cloukey who did an amazing job in previous years of coordinating our large network of kitchen volunteers. Farleen has already proven her skill with organizing the kitchen and food for previous events: the 2017 Thanksgiving Dinner, 2018 Winter Skill Retreat, 2018 Volunteer Trainings, 2018 Maine Guides Courses, and a few smaller events. Farleen is retired from the U.S. Army and lives in Lee with her husband, House in the Woods Volunteer Hunting Guide Dean Smith.

Earlier This Month We Celebrated and We Trained

We hope you had a wonderful 4th of July with family and friends as you celebrated our Nation’s Independence Day. The 4th is one of the many  milestones Americans celebrate with festivities such as  watching fireworks and parades or family gatherings and barbecues. 

On July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event.

In the days that seemed to fly by for the long weekend we hope you took a moment to thank those who are active military and any veterans you may have seen during the 4th. Without courageous men and women our Independence Day would be nonexistent. Today’s soldier continues to serve us all providing our freedom and liberties.

Becky Saulnier, Former Petroleum Supply Specialist at 92F, United States Army shares: I Love Independence Day! Not just because of it being my birthday, parade, fireworks and BBQ. Those things are great however, we would not be celebrating had others not been fighting for our Independence from the Crown. Something that has always stuck with me ever since I was in the military is the “Soldiers Creed”. The second to last verse of that is “I’m a Guardian of Freedom and the American Way of Life”. I take great pride in that Creed and in my Country. Happy Birthday America We Love You!

Editor’s Note: I’ve had the opportunity to meet Jim a couple of times when visiting HITW. He shared his “story” with me which you will find in the September 22, 2017 Black Bear Hunt newsletter, written by Jim himself. Take the time to read it. He’s an outstanding Marine veteran. You will also enjoy reading his blog on his website. He is also a very talented writer. I love reading is work.

With my Registered Maine Guide test approaching I decided to take the opportunity to sit down with some truly awesome people and refresh the ol’ brain. It is always great to be around other Veterans. I’m also thankful for those who are not Veterans but dedicate there time and energy and resources into helping Veterans. We all have our own path. How we navigate that path is up to us. If you are a Veteran who loves to hunt or fish you should contact House in the Woods! If you are interested in volunteering they can always use the help (hunting or fishing is not required…it’s just fun). They have plenty of work to be done and I know they could use the extra hands. I look forward to getting back there very soon to give them a hand and help out. If you are not sure how to help but want to, contact Paul and he will let you know what they need. Thank you Jim Neville for offering an amazing opportunity. Thank you Paul House and Deanna House for creating such an amazing non-profit and a way to help with healing. Gifts to House in the Woods

Dee and Nancy Lothrop traveled to East Madison where the local Quilts of Valor chapter presented HITW with a beautiful quilt. The quilt has log cabins and pine trees in an American colored pattern. Marlene Brooks, who sewed the quilt, also explained that there are several hand-stitched images to find in the pattern such as canoes and bears. The quilting chapter also presented 5 area veterans with hand sewn quilts.

Editor’s Request: 

As the creator of the monthly newsletter for House in the Woods I am wondering if you, as a reader, can be of assistance to me.

Are you a veteran who has attended any of our events in the past 4 years? Are you a volunteer who lends a hand all the time or even once in a while? Are you a visitor who heard about House in the Woods and came to visit the gorgeous lodge?  

You usually find my request of “please share” when I publish the newsletter. It is through this sharing that the word spreads and that is another way you can…and have…helped!! From increased readership stems the increased number of attendees to HITW events, which helps to increase sponsors to the great cause for our veterans.

I am in need of the following:

pictures/videos: do you any pictures and/or videos of a House in the Woods event you attended as a veteran, visitor or volunteer?

testimonies: can you share any type of testimony which speaks of your experience while at HITW, whether it was a day or a week or if you return annually for an event. 

As a writer I depend on both aspects to spread the word. The testimonies paint a picture with words so readers can learn exactly what HITW has meant to you. Incorporating more visual elements such as images and videos help to make the testimony more engaging and to show the readers that it is coming from an actual person. 

As our readership of the monthly newsletter grows, you will find each month pictures and testimonies (some long, some a few sentences) which help the reader assimilate with the news and events we are sharing. All of this is provided to me through research and my asking for material to share from gracious contributors who are happy to be of assistance.

I am certain that there are many more pictures out there and I would sincerely appreciate receiving them along with the description of the event and the date in which you attended.

May 28th 2018 is Memorial Day

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the United States Military.

As you spend your holiday with friends and family, remember that Memorial Day represents the sacrifices of thousands of those young men and women who stepped up for your freedom!

When an American Flag is being presented or the National Anthem is being sung, it is proper and respectful to: stand, remove your hat, put right hand over heart until flag passes or anthem is over, do not talk, sit down after the flag has been removed or is marched further down the street, or when the announcer asks you to take your seat.

This is not showing respect to a colored piece of cloth. It is showing respect to the people who have sacrificed for our freedoms. Please show proper respect when a flag is being presented.

National Military Spouse Appreciation Day

On Military Spouse Appreciation Day we honor the contributions and sacrifices made by military spouses. Their commitment and support help to keep our country safe. 

America’s military spouses are the backbone of the families who support our troops during mission, deployment, and reintegration. Military spouses are silent heroes who are essential to the strength of the nation, and they serve our country just like their loved ones.

At House in the Woods we firmly stand by all members of our military families. Military spouses are another division of America’s Heroes!! When they walk through the door of our lodge it is with open arms and warm hugs of appreciation that we welcome all wives and husbands of those who actively serve and spouses of all our veterans.

Volunteer Appreciation Night.

On Friday, Paul spoke about the mission and purpose of House in the Woods history. Speaking of who we serve and why. Some of our wonderful (current) volunteers spoke about their many experiences as a volunteer, while Paul presented different opportunities at HITW for new volunteers.

Dee awarded certificates of appreciation to volunteers with more than 10 hours in 2017.  Including our UMaine intern, we recognized 30 volunteers.

Many new volunteers were present both days for the training. Thus we shall be handing out more certificates at the 2nd Annual Volunteer Training session.

Approximately 50 people were in attendance. The lodge was nearly at capacity Friday night with some people staying overnight in our quest suites. 

On Saturday, we had three groups break into two sessions.  The groups were:  

Pro-Staff: consists of our guides and guide assistants.

Beyond First Aid with Mike Winslow

 

  Mike Winslow has been one of Maine’s finest Baxter Park Rangers for nine years, is a certified Wilderness First Responder and is also a Registered Maine Guide. He often teams up with Maine Search & Rescue with the Wilderness Rescue Team.

He taught our volunteers a Wilderness First Aid course, utilizing interactive scenarios one may face while spending time with our veterans and active military in the wood of Maine. Skills essential to have under your belt as a guide or guide’s assistant: what to do in an emergency out in the wood hunting, hiking or on the rivers and lakes fishing.

 Working with PTSD Veterans with Capt. Mark Thurlow

Capt. Mark Thurlow of Katadhin Valley Health Care is currently serving in the Army and the Army Reserves for over 20 years he is currently a Captain of the US Army. Mark is a licensed clinical therapist. He received his education at the University of Maine, Orono with a BA in Psychology and a Masters in Educational Counseling and Social Work.

People who suffer from PTSD often suffer from nightmares, flashbacks, difficulty sleeping, and feeling emotionally numb. These symptoms can significantly impair a person’s daily life.

PTSD is marked by clear physical and psychological symptoms. It often has symptoms like depression, substance abuse, problems of memory and cognition, and other physical and mental health problems. The disorder is also associated with difficulties in social or family life, including occupational instability, marital problems, family discord, and difficulties in parenting.

Military 101 with Chaplain Col. Andrew Gibson

Chaplain Col. Andrew Gibson presented a broad overview of the structure and culture of the American Military.  Based upon over 29 years of experience in the Maine Army National Guard, including two long term deployments overseas, Chaplain Col. Andrew Gibson lead a discussion on how the military effects the spirit and the essence of the individual and how that can lead to barriers, advantages, and misconceptions in the civilian world.

Participants were given an overview of the impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, and suicide among the military.  This information is essential to working with Currently Serving Military Members, Veterans, and their families. We looked at the branches of the military, the essential values that form military culture, core beliefs, and spirit in order to better understand the effects of military service.

 

Many discussions were shared regarding our interaction with those who are currently serving or have served. PTSD has no expiration date. It doesn’t care how long ago it was that you served…it still wants to creep into your life.

 

On the battlefield we leave no soldier behind. As a nation let it be our pledge that when they return we leave no veteran behind.

Kitchen Staff: those who prepare and serve the meals.

Working in a Commercial Kitchen with Chef Dale Stevens 

 

Dale Stevens is a Chef at River Driver’s Restaurant & Pub located at Twin Pine Cabins, overlooking Millinocket Lake and Maine’s highest mountain, Katahdin. Chef Dale prepares hundreds of meals a week .The restaurant has a diverse menu, featuring quality American fare highlighted by seasonal, local, and fresh ingredients, which is the type of meals we strive to prepare for our visitors to the lodge.  Thus, he is the perfect person to give our kitchen staff great advice on cooking for many.

This group prepared the noon meal, made muffins, and crescent rolls  with a spaghetti feed. Delicious!

General Volunteers: 

Hands~Only CPR

Instructor Richard (Rick) Smart is the owner of RLS Training Consultants provides firefighters, healthcare personnel and the public with CPR and Safety Training.

RLS staff are American Heart Instructors plus many are National Fire Academy Certified Fire Instructors. He also instructs EMT/Firefighter classes at Northern Penobscot Tech Region III.

Many who may have taken CPR Certification years ago remember chest compression and mouth~to~mouth breaths. Now it is recommended the quickest way to save a life is:  If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of any tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute. Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.

We recommend all volunteers to know how to perform CPR in an emergency with guests. We were so glad to have Richard’s expertise in this vital training.

 

 

General Communication 101

Instructor James Butts is a licensed clinical Social Worker at the Vet Center where he served his internship in 2017. James served with the US Army Reserves 2008-2016.

James led a group session about strategies for engaging Veterans in conversations.

We do not and should not ask personal questions. Listening is key. Listen without judgement. Listen without asking more questions. Talk about practical issues such as where they live.  Do not initiate a conversation about any trauma they experienced. If they want to bring that to you, again listen and listen more!

Veterans might not want to talk about their deployment. Conversing is still important….but so is LISTENING!

May 3rd, 2018 Annual Women Veterans’       Turkey Hunt

Our May 3rd House in the Woods held it’s Annual 3~Day  Women Veterans’ Turkey Hunt! Even with a brief hail storm, nothing could stop this group of adventurous, determined hunters!! 

Our lodging was at the awesome Bucks Crossing in Parkman, Maine where Matthew and Virginia Young were such great hosts for our adventure!

I can not express how amazing this experience was. Went on my very first Turkey hunt with House In The Woods. We stayed in Parkman at The Bucks Crossing. Sometimes life has a very funny way of putting you right where you are meant to be. Everyone there was just so awesome! I just can’t put words to it. One thing is for sure I sure do feel “Rebooted”. There were bonds made and laughs to last a lifetime. Some people think stalking a turkey is too much work but I thought it was exciting and was right in my element! I learned so much and just can not express how thankful I’m to have met everyone there and how grateful I am for the knowledge they shared. My very first Turkey was harvested with the shotgun my dad gave me. I could feel my dad’s smile and that is worth more than any amount of money. Thank you everyone again. We even had an eagle fly down between us and the decoys! It’s hard to express just how grateful I am to everyone who helped make this hunt happen. I couldn’t stop smiling on the way home! Simply put…an awesome trip with some awesome people! Great memories! Thank you so much for all you, Mike, Paul, Matt and Ginny did for us.

Paul House shares: I know personally that I really enjoyed the time we spent together whether it was as at camp or trying to hunt!  We had a special group at camp the veterans and the guides, even though I was trying to figure out who my wife’s husband was!! Hahaha!!! Great memories!!

NOTE:  The men’s Turkey Hunt was held in the Newport area while the women were in the Parkman area. But to this editor’s disappointment the male counterparts rarely consider taking photos of their hunts. (Still love all you guys!!) Thus, no proof of any harvest, but……we are certain it was a successful hunt.

Those Massachusetts folks have some serious cornhole skills!!! All of whom were there to support House in the Woods. Forty different companies and over 80 participants made the evening a time to remember. 

There was some great food, raffles and special games throughout the event. 

 Joining Paul House and Luke House was Kyle Purington who is a U.S. Army Veteran and staunch supporter of House in the Woods. This Massachusetts Cornhole Tournament was made possible through Kyle’s business network.

 

 

 

Gold Star Parents

Both sets of parents Gold Star Parents who both lost a son…a warrior…a hero. The Sullivans reside in Washington County, Maine. They are parents of Capt. Chris Sullivan, US Army 1st Division Infantry out of Ft. Hood Texas. Paul and Dee, Dolly and Jim were proudly participating in Alexander Grange Post 304s Hometown Heroes Appreciation Day. The post had Summit Project Stones for Area Fallen Heroes.

Capt. Christopher J. Sullivan, 29, of Princeton, Massachusetts, died January 18, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his parked vehicle.  Sullivan was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Another young man who served our country and paid the ultimate sacrifice. 

 

May 5th, 2018 Clearing of More Land!

 The land across the parking lot at HITW was donated by the very generous Jay and Annette Haynes. This weekend, Sullivan Trucking, Mike Thurlow, Tony Frenette, Gregg Sullivan, Issac Raymond and many others and business donors, came together to clear the 2.5 acre lot. We plan to seed it with grass this summer. Next year we want to add a fire pit, horse shoe pit, some fruit trees, and who knows what else!!! 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Big equipment, awesome crew and we now have more space!!

 

Lots of hard, dusty work but it is so very worth it to create more space for our events and attendees. Looking forward to a great fire pit, campfires at night and some good times just relaxing after a day of fishing, black bear hunting, dear hunting or a good turkey hunt.

 

Priceless friends who stepped up to make more room for outdoor activities for our guests at House in the Woods. Big space for fire pit and great conversations around the fire by many of our veterans and combat wounded who seek rest and a strong listening ear of another who has “been there”.

Finished!! A weekend of hardworking, dedicated men who donated time and equipment to make this a reality! Some times “thank you” just doesn’t seem sufficient!

Our Youngest Ambassadors

In 1986 Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger designated April as the Month of the Military Child  to recognize and honor the service of our youngest heroes, our military kids…often called Military Brats.

Most of us know a military child. Many who serve our country in the Armed Forces have children, and many of us were military brats ourselves! Some of us went on to serve and our children became the Unsung Heroes.

House in the Woods Military and Family Retreat often has attendees who bring their spouses and their children to share in the events. We are steadfast supporters of these families. We fully comprehend their lifestyle and their losses. We honor them and are here to help them.

We always make these children aware of how proud we are of them and thank them for their service as our Unsung Heroes.

Please make it a point to welcome the military family to your neighborhood and show them the sincere respect they deserve.

Not your average 9~5 job!!

Dusty Tuckness and Matt Merritt are entertainers who used to be referred to as “rodeo clowns”.

As Matt explains;  Oxford Dictionary defines the term Rodeo Clown as a person whose job is to distract the bull from the rider who has been unseated in a bull riding event, or to provide comic entertainment for an audience between events. This definition was absolutely correct in earlier years of rodeo but in the 21st century of rodeo we have separated these jobs and given them two different job titles that each one respectfully deserves. Now we have bullfighters and entertainers.

Brandon Deaton, U.S. Army Retired

BRANDON DEATON: U.S. Army, retired Infantry Sergeant Team Leader wounded in 2007 while serving in Iraq with 10th Mountain Division. Single amputee from Brunswick, Maine who spent 20 months at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and returned to active duty with his infantry unit for  1.5 years. Personal awards include: Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Airborne Wings, Purple Heart, 3 Army Commendation Medals, 3 Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and an Army Overseas Service Medal. Now resides in Brunswick, ME with fiancé, Riva. They will be married in September. Brandon joined us at our lodge for a week of moose hunting last year! When the weather gets warmer, around May, Brandon can be found jumping out of a plane with Windy Warrior.  The Windy Warrior is Adrenaline Therapy Program is an outside-the-plane approach to PTSD / Suicide Prevention for qualified veterans nationwide. A unique way to help our veterans.

Many of us know firsthand the sacrifices you make/made for every American.  From every branch of the military… you are one. Your brothers and sisters are everywhere. We honor you every day and want you each to know that we are ALWAYS here to help in any way possible. 

SSGT. Andrew (Drew) Roberson, U.S. Marine Corp, Company A 1st Battalion 25th Marines brought his unit color guard from Brunswick, Maine to present at the PBR event. Drew was at last fall’s black bear hunt at our lodge where he quickly became friends with Matt Merritt. Both men have a special affinity with House in the Woods.

Matt Merritt was introduced to HITW by Debi Gould, an Account Executive with WABI TV5 Maine and Director of Up Country Productions. Debi  has been a valued friend and supporter of our mission at HITW from day~one!

Debi told Matt he should visit our lodge during black bear week…….Thus, the amazing results of networking with those you know, connecting and sharing their individual business and personal networks. There are so many similar stories of how the word spreads regarding all that HITW has to offer our military. Lifetime friends are made at our lodge.

Marine, Mario Real was also at the black bear hunt last fall with Drew and Matt Merritt. Michael Gould…familiar last name as he is Debi’s husband.. was Army Reserve and has been on the Sheriff’s Department for nearly 30 years. These gentlemen continue to serve our country and are all connected to House in the Woods, all are good friends.

 

SSGT. Andrew (Drew) Roberson, U.S. Marine Corp, Company A 1st Battalion 25th Marines.  June of 2004 he joined the Corps., deployed to Iraq in 2005 and again in 2006. In 2011 SSGT. Roberson  deployed to Afghanistan and again in 2013. He currently serves as the Training Chief, Equal Opportunity Representative, Company Physical Training Representative, Toys for Tots Coordinator, and is an integrated billet for Selected Marine Corps Reserves as the Company Gunnery Sergeant.  His awards include the Purple Heart, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of 3^rd award, and the Combat Action Ribbon with gold star in lieu of 2^nd award.

Drew resides in Brunswick, Maine with his wife Amanda and two children under the age of four years.

Battle of The Badges

April 7th, 2018, Saturday at Lee Academy

Battle of the Badges is our own local “phenomenon” that grips the , Maine sports enthusiasts who wear a badge to work: Police, sheriff, fire, forest ranger, game warden….They showed up on April 7th….they all shot hoops, fouled one another out, made 3-pointers and helped a veteran by playing some great competitive games!!

 

We are so thankful for all of you who serve our great state of Maine and we are indeed grateful that you continue to support those who wear a different uniform….the United States Military.

Battle of the Badges Basketball tournament, which has been held in Hampden, Maine for the past few years, had a new location this year. 

The individual who organized this fun event between those who wear the badge was being deployed to Afghanistan and unable to organize the this year.  At the last minute a couple of troopers got together  to hold this one in Lee. Where there is a need, our family of local public safety employees who serve, always have our back and step up to help.

Paul House, Executive Director of House in the Woods had the pleasure to be the guest speaker at AARP, Bangor, Maine the first week of April, to speak about our mission for our Armed Forces and those who serve/served.

AARP is not only for those over 50 years of age! They value the freedom and rights secured by veterans, the military and their families. AARP continues to advocate for veterans’ issues providing relevant information and resources to assist them and their families with whatever challenges or opportunities they face.

Dee had the opportunity to meet with Travis  who was the inspirational guest speaker at the Readiness Program Seminar.

The Family Readiness is a critical issue for the Department of Defense. Quality of life and family matters are priority issues for the Secretary and the services. The Department’s ability to assist service members and their families to prepare for separations during short and long term deployments is paramount to sustaining mission capabilities and mission readiness. The Reserve components have worked closely with their parent services to develop seamless, integrated family readiness and support programs that provide information and services to all members, regardless of the parent service or component of the member-Active, Guard or Reserve.

As we prepare for the 2018 season, I would like to thank each one of you for a job well done! I’m sure you’ve heard it said before, “Many hands make light work”. This was definitely true last season.

Together we gave 3,937 hours to  the lodge, since I started keeping track in August. What a fantastic outpouring of community support for our veterans and HITW.

We will be hosting a volunteer/staff training on Friday evening and Saturday, April 27 and 28, 2018. We are still in the planning phase for this program, more detailed information will be available by the end of March.

Come join House in the Woods for a few days of fabulous fishing on Chamberlain Lake at Nugents Camp!

Cabins on the shore and time on the water with other brothers-in-arms very often stimulates a good talk with those who have been in your boots. The kind of conversations that may be  difficult to have at home following the physical and psychological trauma of combat.  Casting that line to see what shows up on the other end is a great conversation in itself!

The House in the Woods Military & Family Retreat’s Mission is to create a therapeutic, recreational, and educational retreat for our nation’s U.S. armed forces and their families, using outdoor wilderness activities in Maine and natural habitats.

REMEMBER: all events at House in the Woods are FREE to all veterans, active military and their families.

It is in such an environment that many of our combat wounded open up to  share common challenges related to their service and sacrifice. We have always known; it takes a vet to understand a vet……these are the brothers and sisters who protect our Nation’s Freedom and Democratic Ideals.

And….there is the simple presence of nature that can clear your mind; water slapping against the boat, birds on the shore, the revitalizing fresh air to fill your lungs, the sun sparkling on the water. A moment you will always remember and want to return to again and again.

Our goal is to help, in any way possible, to assist in the reintegration of our Armed Forces warriors to life at home. Come join us to see for yourself.

ARMED FORCES DAY

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.

The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

The first Armed Forces Day was held on May 20, 1950, and given the Teamed for Defense theme. It was selected as a way to show that all branches of the military had been united under one department of the government.

 Approximately 10,000 American troops marched past the President in Washington D.C., while 33,000 people in New York City commemorated the occasion under an air cover of 250 military planes of all types.

Famous World War II warships were in harbors across the country for the public to see, and precision flying teams filled the skies. The American people came together across the country to honor members of the Armed Forces….Courtesy of U.S. Veterans Magazine  U.S. Veterans Magazine

In 1961, John F. Kennedy declared Armed Forces Day a national holiday. It’s celebrated on the third Saturday of every May and is exhibited by exercises, parades, and receptions that highlight and honor our amazing military and all of its strength.

Since Armed Forces Day is not a federal holiday, many military installations are available for public viewing for those wishing to take part in the celebration or to learn more about our country’s military.

Some other ways to celebrate the special occasion include  flying the American Flag (which many of us do 24/7/365), talking with or writing to a military member, donating to military-based organizations, or sending care packages for those serving overseas.

2nd Annual Golf Tournament at

It’s a Monday, Call in Sick, Take a Comp Day, Cut Class…Whatever it Takes!!!

Martindale Country Club, a premier golf course in Maine, is once again graciously opening up their beautiful golf course for a day as a fund raiser for House in the Woods. Those involved in creating this great event  are graciously donating their time. This year we are serving a light breakfast, and outdoor grill lunch and food will be served at the awards banquet.

Plan ahead as you do not want to miss this fun and somewhat competitive day!!!  Can’t make it that day? Please consider sponsoring a veteran for the day. Fabulous cause for all our veterans from all states in our great country!

The Farmington Emblem Club #460 is a group of members that support community charities, enjoy helping Veterans and have a dedication to patriotism. They presented Paul House with a generous donation for House in the Woods.

 

Whether participants are sitting under the countless stars on a cloudless summer night or reflecting on their own reflections in the glass-like stillness of a Maine pond during a 4:00 a.m. summer sunrise, there is a therapy in realizing one’s enduring place in eternity. As participants face the outdoor challenges presented by Mother Nature herself, they will derive a sense of accomplishment, find, through exercise, a release of stress, and have the opportunity to talk and share with one another the laughter, memories, sorrow, service, and pride, among many other common bonds.
